Westermarck-seura vaatii akateemista boikottia

Westermarck-seura vaatii israelilaisten yliopistojen akateemista boikottia (BDS). Sosiologeina on vastuullamme arvioida kriittisesti eriarvoisuutta ja vallan väärinkäyttöä. Vaadimme, että suomalaiset yliopistot lopettavat kaiken akateemisen toiminnan ja projektit, joita rahoittavat tai järjestävät israelilaiset yliopistot, valtiolliset instituutiot tai näiden lobbausryhmät. Lisäksi vaadimme akateemisen yhteistyön ja opiskelija- ja tutkijavaihto-ohjelmien lopettamista näiden ryhmien  kanssa. 

Emme voi vaieta, kun Kansainvälinen tuomioistuin ja Yhdistyneet kansakunnat puhuvat kansanmurhasta. Arvioiden mukaan Gazaan on pudotettu viimeisen vuoden aikana noin kahden atomipommin verran räjähteitä – yhteensä 25 000 tonnia. Väkivaltaisuuksissa arvioidaan kuolleen virallisten raporttien mukaan yli 40 000 palestiinalaista siviiliä. Välillisesti tilanteen vuoksi kuolleiden, kuten tuhoutuneen infrastruktuurin, tautien ja ulkopuolisen avun estämisen seurauksena, määrä ylittää jo 180 000 ihmistä. Lisäksi Israelin pommitus on tuhonnut yli 80 prosenttia Gazan kouluista ja kaikki sen yliopistoista. Tästä käytetään termiä “scholasticide”, jonka YK:n asiantuntijat määrittelevät “koulutuksen systemaattiseksi tuhoamiseksi opettajien, oppilaiden ja henkilökunnan pidätysten, tappamisen ja koulutusinfrastruktuurin tuhoamisen kautta.” Huhtikuussa 2024 5 479 opiskelijaa, 261 opettajaa ja 95 professoria oli tapettu Gazassa Israelin toimesta ja luvut ovat vain jatkaneet kasvuaan. 

Israelilaistet yliopistot ovat tiiviisti kytköksissä maan aseteollisuuteen, tiedustelupalveluihin ja puolustusvoimiin. Tel Avivin yliopisto tekee yhteistyötä Elbit Systemsin, maan suurimman asetuottajan, kanssa kehittääkseen aseteknologioita, joita on käytetty Gazassa ja Libanonissa sekä Israelin asevoimien koulutuksessa. Lisäksi yliopistot tarjoavat opintopisteitä ja taloudellista tukea opiskelijoille, jotka ovat palvelleet Gazassa. Jerusalemin heprealainen yliopisto on puolestaan kehittänyt Israelin puolustusvoimien kanssa akateemisen ohjelman, joka on mahdollistanut armeijan tukikohdan sijoittamisen yliopiston tiloihin ja aseiden kantamisen kampuksella. Bezalel Academy of Art and Design ja Shenkar College of Engineering and Design ovat osallisia puolustusvoimien univormujen tuottamisessa. Israelilaisten yliopistojen ja maan puolustus- ja tiedustelujoukkojen tiiviin yhteistyön vuoksi myös israelilaiset akateemikot kuten sosiologit, jotka vastustavat apartheidvaltiota, ovat kohdanneet mielipiteidensä ja toimintansa tukahduttamista. 

Westermarck-seura vetoaa jäsentemme sekä muiden järjestöjen moraaliseen vastuuseen ja kutsuu liittymään vaatimukseemme akateemisesta boikotista. Kritisoimme suomalaisten yliopistojen hallitusten pyrkimyksiä rajoittaa akateemista vapautta ja protesteja Palestiinan tilanteeseen liittyen. Vaikka Helsingin yliopisto päätti lopettaa vaihto-ohjelmat israelilaisten yliopistojen kanssa, tämä saavutus olisi ollut mahdoton ilman opiskelijoiden ja henkilökunnan aktiivista toimintaa ja protestointia.

The Westermarck Society Calls for Academic BDS

The Westermarck Society calls for an academic boycott, divestment, and sanction (BDS) of Israeli universities. As sociologists, it is our duty to critically interrogate concerns of inequality and power. To this end, we demand that Finnish universities terminate academic activities and projects funded or organized by Israeli universities, state institutions, or lobbies; academic activities and projects that involve collaboration with Israeli universities, state institutions, or lobbies; and student or researcher exchange agreements to and from Israeli universities.

We cannot afford to remain silent in the wake of what the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the United Nations (UN) consider a genocide. Roughly two nuclear bombs worth of explosives, nearly 25,000 tons, have been dropped on Gaza this year. While the official death toll amounts to nearly 40,000 persons, armed conflict also results in indirect death by communicable, non-communicable, and reproductive diseases, due to non-existent or weakened infrastructure and obstruction of external aid. If indirect death is taken into consideration, some experts estimate a plausible death toll upward of 180,000 persons. Furthermore, Israel has bombed to rubble or severely damaged over 80 percent of schools in Gaza. Meanwhile, every university on the Gaza Strip has been destroyed by the Israeli army. This effectively comprises a scholasticide for UN experts, defined as “the systemic obliteration of education through the arrest, detention or killing of teachers, students and staff, and the destruction of educational infrastructure.” As of April 2024, close to 5,479 students, 261 teachers, and 95 university professors were killed by Israeli forces in Gaza; these numbers have only risen since. 

Israeli universities are closely connected to the country’s arms industry, intelligence services, and military. Tel Aviv University has a documented relationship with Elbit Systems, the largest Israeli weapons manufacturer, in order to develop weapons technologies that were deployed in Gaza and Lebanon and train Israeli soldiers. In addition, Israeli universities offer academic credit and financial support to students deployed in Gaza. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was awarded ”a controversial tender to run an academic excellence program for the Israel Defense Forces’ Intelligence Corps,” effectively a military base on university premises, in which students can carry firearms on campus. Studios and workshops in the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design and the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design have been used to produce the pockets, tabs, and straps attached to uniforms for Israeli soldiers — pockets that hold bullets and grenades. As a result of the impenetrable relationship between the arms industry, intelligence services, and the military to Israeli universities, Israeli academics, including sociologists, who are critical to the apartheid state have been met with active suppression.

The Westermarck Society appeals to the moral conscience of our members and other disciplinary societies to join us in our call for an academic BDS. Accordingly, the Westermarck Society criticizes the actions of different Finnish university administrations to constrain academic freedom and suppress protests on the question of Palestine. We also extend our support to student bodies across Finnish universities who have also called for BDS and organized demonstrations in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Westermarck Society urges every Finnish university to immediately terminate collaborations with Israeli universities. We cannot settle for anything less.
