Westermarck-seuran valtakunnalliset Sosiologipäivät Rovaniemellä 7.-8.5.2026
Sosiologipäivien 2026 teema on yhteisön tulevaisuudet. Yhteisön käsite kutsuu kokoontumaan perusasioiden äärelle, onhan sosiologian yksi ydinkysymyksistä miten me elämme yhdessä. Päivillä tarkastellaan yhteisöjen moninaisia ja monimutkaisia muotoja ja sitä, miten yhteisöjä kuvitellaan ja rakennetaan nyt ja tulevaisuudessa
Kysymys miten suuntaa huomion siihen, etteivät yhteisöt ole yhdenlaisia, vakaita entiteettejä, vaan jatkuvassa liikkeessä. Yhteisöjä ei pidä nähdä tämänhetkiseen olemukseensa lukkiutuneina vaan kehkeytyvinä ja muutokselle avoimina. Yhteisöt eivät vain ole, vaan niitä tehdään. Yhteisöjen ylläpitäminen vaatii jatkuvaa työtä, neuvottelua ja yhteensovittamista.
Yhteisöjen rajat joustavat. Yhteisöihin kuulutaan ja niistä irrottaudutaan. Emme myöskään ole yhdessä vain toisten ihmisten kanssa vaan aina muiden kuin inhimillisten olentojen ja olomuotojenkanssa ja välittäminä. Yhteisöihin sisältyy siis vallankäyttöä ja eriarvoisuuksia: kysymys miten elämme yhdessä laajenee nopeasti kysymykseksi keiden ja minkä kanssa elämme yhdessä, ja ketä ja mitä suljemme pois.
Nykysosiologialle yhteisöstä tekee hankalan sen teoreettinen epämääräisyys ja arkikielinen, idealisoitu painolasti. Epävarmoina aikoina mielikuvat yhteisöstä vetävät puoleensa lupauksilla kuulumisesta ja turvallisuudesta. Yhteisöllisyyden positiiviset konnotaatiot jättävät huomiotta, että yhteisöt voivat olla myös vaarallisia. Siksi kriittinen, sosiologinen ymmärrys yhteisöistä ja yhteisöjen tulevaisuuksista on juuri nyt ajankohtaista.

Työryhmäehdotukset tulee jättää 1.12.2025 mennessä osoitteeseen sosiologipaivat@gmail.com. Työryhmäehdotuksen enimmäispituus on 500 sanaa. Työryhmät varmistuvat 15.12.2025 mennessä. Esitelmäabstraktien ohjepituus on 300 sanaa ja ne tulee lähettää työryhmän yhteyshenkilölle 16.2.2026 mennessä.

Community Futures
Annual Finnish Sociology Conference
May 7-8, 2026
University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland
The theme of the 2026 Annual Finnish Sociology Conference is Community Futures. The concept of community invites us to return to foundational questions, the core concerns of sociology, how we live together. The conference explores communities in their diverse and complex forms and opens up different research approaches to how communities are imagined and reimagined—both now and in the future.
The question how directs attention to the fact that communities are not singular, stable entities, but constantly in motion. Communities do not merely exist—they are made. Maintaining communities requires ongoing work, negotiation, and coordination. Hence, communities should not be seen as fixed in their current form but as emerging and open to change.
The boundaries of communities are flexible. One joins communities and disengages from them. Moreover, we do not live together only with other people, but always also with and mediated by non-human beings and entities. Communities, therefore, involve power and inequalities: the question of how we live together quickly expands into a question of with whom and with what we live together—and whom and what we exclude.
For contemporary sociology, the concept of community is challenging due to its theoretical vagueness and the idealized connotations it carries in everyday language. In uncertain times, imaginaries of community lure with promises of belonging and security. The positive connotations of community often overlook the fact that communities can also be dangerous and oppressing. That is why a critical, sociological understanding of communities and their futures is especially relevant right now.
Call for Papers
Please submit proposals (max 500 words) for the working groups by December 1, 2025 to sosiologipaivat@gmail.com. Accepted working groups will be confirmed by December 15, 2025. Paper proposals (max 300 words) should be submitted to the convener of the respective working group by February 16, 2026.
